Optimist - Leeward Mark Rounding

The aim of the leeward mark rounding is to turn the boat from a downwind course onto a close hauled course, aiming to exit close to the mark going at full speed. The heel, trim and mainsheet should be used to help turn the boat which will result in a smooth and controlled mark rounding.

Optimist - Windward Mark Rounding

The aim of the windward mark rounding is to turn the boat from a close hauled course onto a downwind course whilst staying as close to the mark as possible. The heel of the boat and the mainsheet should be used to help facilitate this turn enabling a smooth and controlled mark rounding.

Optimist - Gybing

Gybing safely and effectively is another very important single handed skill. The aim is to ensure that the positioning of hands and feet is correct and that the steering is precise and controlled. This will enable a smooth movement across the boat and to allow the boat to exit the gybe quickly, upright and in control.

Optimist - Tacking

Tacking, efficiently is a key single handed skill. You should aim to perfect your tacking so that you can capitalise on small tactical opportunities. It is important to ensure that the positioning of hands and feet is correct to enable accurate and progressive steering, with good timing and a smooth movement across the boat. This will allow the boat to exit the tack quickly, with maximum power, and with you in control.

Optimist - Accelerating

The aim is to bring the boat up to full speed quickly, within the rules and under full control. In most cases this technique will be used on a start line with the boat initially stationary or moving very slowly on or around a close hauled course. This is an important skill, vital to ensuring a good start, and making sure you have tactical options soon after.

Optimist - Stopping

Low speed boat handling is a very imortant skill in any sailing dinghy, stopping or slowing the boat down quickly, accurately and under control is a skill which is most often used to execute a good start. The principles are very similar across the classes but there are some key points which will help you demonstrate the manoeuvre most effectively in an Optimist.
